Over the years it has become a tradition that people bring me their spent orchids for rehabilitation. It takes patience and the right type of care, but eventually they bloom again (and again). It is a long-term ritual I find deeply satisfying. One of my all-time favorite scents happens just after watering the orchids, when the Oakmoss I place in their pots becomes damp and fills my home with its exceptional scent of soft earth, wet woods, and distant flowers.

Oakmoss is a type of lichen, which is one of the most successful models for relationship on the planet. For thousand of years Oakmoss has not just survived but thrived, thanks to the beautiful union of algae and filaments of fungi. Oakmoss can withstand the test of time, diversity, and adversity. It is its own, unique entity, yet it wouldn’t be here without the symbiotic relationship between two distinct species.

This scent is in celebration of the wildly fantastic existence of Oakmoss, and the possibility it represents for our relationships with one another. Invited to the orgy is bright citrusy Bergamot, green Basil, and lusty Jasmine, with subtler undertones of resinous Frankincense, warm Cedarwood, and Vanilla (which is, itself, an orchid).

This ensemble of elements creates a fresh, clean, forest-floor-like fragrance that begs the question: “Why just watch when you can join in?”
