The rose oil in Smoked Rose comes from one organic farm in Egypt. The same family has grown and distilled roses on that land for generations.

I went to photograph the harvest. Picking starts in the dark, around three in the morning, and is finished by midday.

That morning a neighbouring field was burning. Smoke rolled across the rows while lunch for the pickers, heavy with cumin, cooked nearby. Smoked Rose is that morning, and proof that rose was never only for women.
